There are three chart styles depending on what style you find easiest to use. The charts are a handy guide to the distances between some of the main places found along the trail, so they can be a useful tool for planning a day out.
- NDW Distance Chart (Farnham-Dover) is the direct route, known as the southern loop or alternate route, between Farnham and Dover. It does not go through Canterbury. It includes distances in Miles + Kilometres between any two of 25 points along the Trail. Formatted to fit on to an A4 page (landscape) and print in colour or monochrome.
- NDW Distance Chart (Farnham-Dover via Canterbury) takes in the northen part of the loop via the UNESCO World Heritage site. It includes distances in Miles + Kilometres between any two of 26 points along the Trail. Formatted to fit on to an A4 page (landscape) and print in colour or monochrome.
- The Distance Checklist is formatted as a table and shows distances in miles and Kilometres, and lists distances in both directions. A4 potrait.
Create your own distance chart
If you're a Trail manager or group which maintains a long distance route or recreational route or event of any kind, we provide a template spreadsheet to let you easily create distance charts which will help your route users plan their journeys, for example linking to towns, refreshment stops or public transport.
Version 1.1 contains a number of additional journey or training planning tools, as well as notes on how to adapt the contents for your needs. Sample data included is from the North Downs Way.
Recreational Route Distance Chart Generator (compressed .zip file) - The Microsoft Excel 2007 (.xlsx) file inside contains no macros but is provided without guarantee - however, it is copyright free, so you are welcome to adapt and modify the spreadsheet for your own or your Trail's use.
The tool is also part of the Good Practice Guide, published by the Institute of Public Rights of Way, with instructions and alternate download.
"This tool is absolutely fantastic"
