The South Downs Way is one of only 2 National Trails formally designated as a long distance bridleway (The Pennine Bridleway being the other). This means that you can enjoy the full 100 miles between Winchester and Eastbourne on the saddle, whether you prefer horseback or bike, its open for you to explore. There are 3 sections along the route where both a footpath and a bridleway route are marked. these are just outside Winchester city, between Beacon Hill and Exton Village and between Alfriston on Eastbourne. Cyclists and horse-riders should therefore stick to the bridleway route as shown above.
