2 things stand out about from a wonderful solo 15 day autumn walk along the length of Offa's Dyke Path from south to north late last month (October). I came south from Durham while my wife was on higher ground in Canada with her Shropshire-born family: firstly, the truly extraordinary variety of landscapes each day and secondly, the pleasure of chatting with others along the way €“ especially at a host of very hospitable B&B's. As a not-so-young walker this was a rich walk to savour one day at a time with rarely more than 15 miles a day along well waymarked and maintained routes. It's often quite wild in places but seldom far from habitation. A flexible schedule allowed for variable weather adjustments as well as a couple of fine rest days to explore Hay and Llangollen.Highlights? Too many to list, but the Wye Valley, Hatterrall Ridge, the Shropshire Hills and Clwydian Range are all pretty special and unique €“ not to mention the ubiquitous Dyke itself.I imagine this is a walk for all seasons but it's especially spectacular with autumn colours. Definitely one of my most treasured UK trail walks! Thanks to the Trail Team for all their efforts.
