Honeystone House Wall, Northumberland, Ffôn: 01573 226711
Blending chic designer interiors and family comforts, Honeystone House sets a new benchmark for modern country house entertaining.
Hewn from local honey-coloured stone, punctured by towering 12-pane sash windows and curvaceous bow windows, Honeystone House is every architecture buff’s dream. And, the second you step into the soaring, fire-warmed entrance hall to note the way its two giant columns, wooden floors and walls are painted in an oh-so-soft grey to subtly deemphasise their scale while washing the entire space with light, you know you’re in interior design heaven too.
Honeystone House is a quintessentially English house, with gracious lines, intricate plasterwork and large sash windows framed by wooden shutters, yet its owners have banished any chintz or fuss, creating a chic, distinctly contemporary home that’s rich in designer details. From eye-popping Thibaut wallpaper paired with rich William Yeoward fabrics in the six bedrooms to vintage cantilever armchairs and a midnight blue velvet sofa in the sitting room, this is a house in which to expect the unexpected.
Despite its generous size, the house benefits from a natural flow between its rooms, complemented by the creation of countless intimate spots in which to enjoy a quiet tête-à-tête, contemplate the garden views or curl up with a book. The sitting room, bathed in light thanks to its tremendous south-west facing bay windows, feeds into an inviting garden room; the dining room features a sofa and armchairs for guests to ‘sit soft’ while lingering after convivial meals; and the light-filled country kitchen also serves as an informal dining space, with a rustic wooden table comfortably seating eight.
Honeystone House claims a secluded setting in 9.5 acres of landscaped gardens and woodland in the lush North Tyne valley. Avid historians will delight in the fact that the property is just a short stroll from Brunton Turret, the remains of a turret and altar that formed a key part of Hadrian’s Wall; the 7th-century St Oswald’s Church; and the battle ground of Heavenfield, which marks the end point of the scenic St Oswald’s Way hiking trail.
The historic town of Hexham, with its splendid abbey, vibrant art scene, weekly market and diverse restaurants, is just four miles away while those seeking a touch of Michelin star foodie heaven need look no further than Restaurant Hjem which has achieved the coveted stamp of approval as the first Michelin starred restaurant in Northumberland. Sitting just one mile from Honeystone House, guests can experience a fantastic tasting menu combining the finest Northumbrian produce with the flair and precision of Scandinavia.
However, for all the temptations on Honeystone House's doorstep, chances are you won’t want to stray too far while you have the opportunity to call it home. The dream pad in which to gather extended family or close friends together for a long overdue reunion or special occasion, it magically blends grandeur with intimacy, boutique hotel style with country house comfort and quintessential Britishness with modern American design.

A stylish four bedroom/four bathroom barn conversion with a large south-facing garden and dream views in the heart of Hadrian’s Wall country.

East End CottageMatfen, Northumberland, Ffôn: 01573 226711
A quintessential Grade II listed cottage in the very pretty village of Matfen in the heart of Northumberland.
Dating back to 1840, East End Cottage is a Grade II listed property sitting on the edge of the very pretty Conservation village of Matfen. The style is distinctly Tudor, its two chimneys illustrative of the genre employed by the Blackett Estate and nearby Matfen Hall.
Aside from its rich history and perfect location for exploring Hadrian’s Wall and the county of Northumberland, this property will charm guests with its tasteful cottage styling and dreamy position right on the Whittle Dean watercourse which runs right along the boundary.
Accessed via a wooden porch with characterful Gothic vergeboards, the cottage has been sensitively redeveloped to protect the character of the original building. High ceilings and original oak beams are key features of the main reception rooms along with 6-pane casement windows which exude cottage charm.
The ground floor is deceptively spacious, the main access hallway leading to a kitchen to the left, a large ground floor shower room off the hallway, and a more formal dining room to the right with a decorative sandstone fireplace. This leads into a sitting room, beautifully furnished with high-backed armchairs and a double sofa set around an open fire. Finally, the summer room is a wonderful spot to enjoy breakfast or read a book and enjoy the natural warmth of the sunshine filter through.
The interior is peppered throughout with fabrics from Colefax and Fowler, along with herringbone Tweed and subtle linens, while cheery ginghams and wool throws from Avoca and Bronte cleverly plays on the cottage theme perfectly.
Upstairs are two bedrooms with characterful coombed ceilings and oak beams – one with a king size bed and a second bedroom with twin beds, which can be configured to a super king. The upstairs bathroom has a three-quarter bath when an end-of-day soak beckons.
Finally step outside and enjoy nature’s symphony from the pretty cottage garden, or when coffee and cake or a pub lunch sound like a good plan, the village shop and Black Bull Inn are just a short hop from the door.
GROUND FLOOR
Access into a small hallway.
Kitchen with two electric ovens and one grill, ceramic hob, slimline dishwasher, integrated fridge/freezer, separate free-standing fridge/freezer, integrated washer / dryer, filter coffee machine, microwave, breakfast table with seating for four.
Ground floor bathroom with corner shower, heated towel rail, basin and WC.
Dining room with decorative fireplace, dining table seating four. Further chairs can be drawn from the kitchen if required.
Sitting room with sofa and two armchairs, open fire, Smart TV, selection of books and games.
Summer room (one step down) with table and four chairs. Please note there is no heating system in this room. During sunny and summer days, this room does get very warm and a door opens-up to the patio garden.
FIRST FLOOR
Bedroom one with king size bed, side tables, chest of drawers, armchair, dressing table, hanging hooks with hangers.
Bathroom with 3/4 bath, heated towel rail, basin and WC.
Bedroom two with twin beds which can be configured to a super king as required, side tables, chest of drawers, chair, hanging hooks with hangers.
OUTSIDE
There is a pretty patio garden with garden furniture to the rear of the cottage with a gate which leads to Matfen village green and the nearby Black Bull pub.
There is a very pretty watercourse called the Whittle Dene which runs right down the permimeter of the cottage, and draws water from the Hallington Reservoir.
The patio garden leads to the parking area and an outer gravelled courtyard with the access gate. Once the access gate is closed, the garden is fully enclosed.
A small outhouse would offer sufficient space to store bikes which can be locked. Please request this on booking.
PARKING
There is parking for two to three cars on the gravelled courtyard to the side of the cottage.
BABIES & CHILDREN
Babies and children are welcome and a high chair and travel cot can be made available on request.
Important - Please note there is a watercourse which runs right down the boundary of the cottage. There is a fence between the patio garden and the watercourse but it is important to note there is a high drop from this point.
The cottage sits directly on the main access road on the edge of the village of Matfen. The main access gate must be closed to enclose the garden.
It is extremely important that children are supervised at all times.
DOGS
Two dogs are welcome at a charge of £20 per dog. Dogs must be kept to the ground floor of the cottage only. They are not permitted on the furniture or in the bedrooms. The garden can be enclosed by closing the main access gate leading into the gravelled courtyard area.
GUEST AMENITIES
Bed linen and towels are provided along with hand soaps and shower gel. A hairdryer is provided in each bedroom. Pillows and duvets are hypo-allergenic.
WI-FI & MOBILE COVERAGE
Wi-Fi is available. Mobile reception is generally good.
HEATING
Underfloor heating through the ground floor. The exception is the summer room which has no heating system but this does get very warm during the summer and sunny days. There is an open fire in the sitting room and radiators upstairs.
GUEST PRIVACY
The cottage is detached and sits on the edge of the pretty village of Matfen. There is a property directly opposite, on the other side of the watercourse which runs down the boundary.

Honeystone HouseWall, Northumberland, Ffôn: 01573 226711

Old Granary HouseHexham, Northumberland, Ffôn: 01573 226711
A stylish four bedroom/four bathroom barn conversion with a large south-facing garden and dream views in the heart of Hadrian’s Wall country.
The Old Granary House is set in the midst of Hadrian’s Wall country, where the River North Tyne meanders its way through undulating Northumbrian countryside towards nearby Hexham. Sleeping seven guests in four bedrooms, the Old Granary House delivers rural seclusion, contemporary interiors and easy access to a wealth of local walks, bike rides, Hadrian’s Wall sites and charming towns.
A handsome stone house surrounded by rolling countryside, the tastefully renovated Old Granary House is ideal for groups of friends or families seeking a spot of blissful isolation without compromising on stylish accommodation. Stepping into the kitchen, you’ll discover an open-plan kitchen, dining and living area that’s flooded with light from bifold doors, which open out onto a generous patio and enclosed garden with far-reaching country views.
A considered mix of the antique and contemporary keep this large ground floor space stylish yet comforting: sleek grey kitchen units contrast with a rustic timber dining table and cane chairs while antique sideboards and a roaring wood burner sit by modern ladder shelves and wrought iron tables.
The blend of old and new continues in the comfortable bedrooms found on the first floor. Size matters when it comes to beds and these do not disappoint, with the three ensuite double rooms comprising a super king and two king size beds. The fourth room, a single, accesses a family bathroom with a bath and shower over it.
As tempting as it will be to simply relax by the fire or on the patio, the Old Granary House claims a host of activities on its doorstep. Lowtown CottageGreenhead, Northumberland, Ffôn: 01573 226711
An ancient stone cottage whose traditional exterior and rural setting belie its bold design and artistic pedigree.
As anybody familiar with Walltown Byre, the sister property to Lowtown Cottage, will know, its owner Sabina Forwood is the queen of vibrant colours and playful interiors. Like her larger sibling, the two-bedroom Lowtown Cottage is packed with Sabina’s signature design touches: eye-popping colours, rich textures, eclectic artworks and big views of the surrounding Northumberland countryside. An avid art collector and accomplished artist herself, Sabina encourages her guests to seek creative inspiration in the rugged countryside that envelops her homes as well as in the artworks they find within them.
First impressions of Lowtown Cottage are misleading. A narrow track brings you through acres of rolling countryside right down to an unassuming stone cottage on the edge of the Vallum. Only the dainty yellow and green sheep statue, perched on a stone at the front of the property, hints at the surprises to come.
As you approach the front door, you can glimpse a modern timber and glass extension on the west wall of the house before stepping into the converted farm cottage to discover - yellow. The entire ground floor of the cottage, comprising an open-plan kitchen, dining and sitting room and the new rear garden room, is resplendent in bright daffodil yellow. Tucked in one corner, a compact lapis blue kitchen contains everything required to rustle up delicious meals to serve at the dining table or nibbles to enjoy in the comfort of the cowhide armchairs by the inglenook fireplace.
The garden room features floor-to-ceiling windows and French doors leading out to the patio, delivering both southerly and westerly views and making it the ideal spot from which to contemplate the untouched beauty of the surrounding countryside. The peace here is complete, broken only by the calls of curlews and plovers, and the occasional passing deer.
Two vaulted en-suite bedrooms await discovery upstairs. Channel your inner Dutch master in one, where a vibrant floral print is daubed onto black wallpaper and continued in fabric adorning the blind and window seat cushions, before leading into a striking black painted bathroom. The second bedroom, dressed in striped apple green wallpaper complemented by a pink silk window seat, features a vast velvet bed flanked by bespoke Susi Bellamy lampshades and cushions.

The SallyIrthington, Carlisle CA6 4PB, UK, Ffôn: 016977 42954
We are Shaun Gardner and Jimmy Little and we own and manage The Sally. We bought the pub in 2016 and our intention was to create a warm and friendly place with high quality products and services that would be welcoming to everyone. We think we’ve achieved this – we hope that you’ll agree. We are committed to ensuring that all our guests and customers have an enjoyable experience and we love what we do. We pride ourselves on going the extra mile to create a fantastic atmosphere for everyone who comes our way. Whether you’re staying with us on a relaxing break or simply passing through for a thirst-quenching drink, you’ll be greeted with the same enthusiasm and treated with the same excellent customer care.Between us we’ve worked all over the UK in various hospitality roles and we previously ran The Brewery House in West Cumbria. When we saw that The Sally was on the market, we jumped at the chance to take on a new project. It seemed like a wonderful challenge and somewhere we could make a real difference, creating something from all our passion and experience. When we took over the pub it had been derelict for several years. Irthington is a beautiful little village on the outskirts of Carlisle. Like so many rural villages, many of its amenities and facilities had slowly been closing down and there was nowhere for people to meet. There was no community hub where people could come together and socialise – no place for them to celebrate or commiserate life’s ups and downs. When we were mapping out our plans for the pub, we knew that this had to stay central to our vision. We didn’t want to come in and create a place where residents didn’t feel welcome. We wanted to build a facility that was inviting and welcoming to everyone – whether you live in the village, just passing through whilst on a walk, or bringing a party of guests to celebrate a special occasion. As we developed the initial plans, and as we have continued to develop the business over the last few years, we made sure that there was plenty of choice, so people can opt to use different areas of the building, depending on their mood or situation. We now have a contemporary bar area towards the back of the building where people can relax and have an informal drink and play traditional pub games. The interior has been specially designed with modern contemporary, almost industrial touches, but with nods to the rural heritage and historical background. Our fully stocked bar has plenty of choice and we work with local suppliers to ensure we have a good range of beers, ales, wines and soft drinks. We also have a great relationship with our local customers who keep our feet firmly on the ground with feedback, suggestions, requests and recommendations.About our BuildingTowards the front of the building we have a spacious dining area. We provide meals throughout the day including breakfasts, lunches and evening meals. We serve a range of delicious and irresistible traditional and European dishes, freshly prepared in-house by Lynette, our head chef, and her experienced team. We work with local suppliers wherever possible and it is vital to us that we always provide high quality. Whether it’s a quick pre-flight breakfast, a light lunch for a hiker or a group of 45 people celebrating a family occasion, we treat every interaction the same – we want you to enjoy it. Keen foodies ourselves, we are always on the lookout for new ingredients, dishes, flavours or ways to present. Jimmy has had a long career in the food industry and has worked all over the UK and he brings all that experience to his role at The Sally. He has handpicked a team to work with him, and together they create the menus, of which we are incredibly proud. As a team, we have a combined experience of many decades and we pour all this into maintaining and improving our visitor experience at The Sally. Staff development is central to our vision and our small team have access to training opportunities so that we can stay up to date with all the latest industry developments. We are always on the lookout for ways to improve our service to customers and opportunities to diversify the business. As a result we decided to expand our premises and add 5 new bedrooms, enabling us to provide accommodation. Both keen travellers ourselves we really appreciate the importance of the little touches that hotels and B&Bs provide. We wanted to create something that gave our guests all the mod cons of a contemporary hotel service but with the personal touch and individuality that can only be provided in an independent business. We have drawn on our own experiences, talked to potential customers and guests, worked with local suppliers and poured all our findings in to our new accommodation provision. We want our guests to feel that The Sally is a ‘home from home’ but with more relaxation and none of the responsibility! We have designed the rooms to have top class facilities and worked with local partners to provide additional touches – for instance, the beds are from a local company and if you’ve had a fantastic night’s sleep, you can order the same mattress to be delivered direct to your home. We have free wi-fi and commercial grade TVs have been fitted as standard, so you can even access your own Netflix account by logging on with your own credentials. We’ve worked alongside a local interior designer to give each room its own personality, influenced by the surrounding area and even the blinds have been chosen so that you can have the windows open, but keep the native midges out!Having first worked as a pot washer here at the age of 12, this has been a kind of homecoming for Jimmy. His mum and dad still live in the village so after working all over the country, he is delighted to be back in the place he grew up and we are both proud that the pub has regained its place at the heart of the community. Having such strong links to the local area means we can provide recommendations for ways to spend your time while you’re with us – and if we don’t know something, we’ll probably know someone who does! We’ve spend lots of time exploring the countryside with our dogs Cassie and Storm and have created some great little trails that take in the surrounding scenery and points o

The area is covered in artefacts of its turbulent past with many tower houses and castles to visit and the Border Esk and River Liddle provide excellent fishing opportunities. Gretna Green and historic Carlisle are also close by. We are approximately 9 miles off the M6 / M74, and 3 miles off the A7, do come and visit as a convenient overnight stop over or for a longer sojourn in the borders.

Camping on Hadrian's Wall
Welcome to a 21st century Lodge and Camping Site
Our site opened in the summer of 2010. Ideally located close to the Hadrian’s Wall trails (walking and cycling) and the beautiful Solway coast, we have facilities catering for all visitors to the area. We are situated between the villages of Monkhill and Beaumont - 4 miles from Carlisle and 9 miles from the start/end of the trail at Bowness on Solway.
Both the Hadrian’s Wall Path and Sustrans Cycle Route 72 are 400 yards from our site. The Northern Lake District (Penrith and Keswick) is within a 40 minute drive with the M6 being approximately a 10 minute drive.
We welcome all those people looking for accommodation with a modern attitude towards outdoor living - particularly walkers and cyclists. We have the award-winning designs in self-catering accommodation and camping cabins:
En-suite Cabins (two available)
The cabins are fully equipped for up to four people with a dining room/lounge/kitchen, bedroom and bathroom, fully heated and with TV. We have two of these cabins on site - sorry, but no dogs allowed in the cabins.
Camping Cabin / Wigwam
These are cabins for those who want a little more comfort than traditional camping. They are equipped with a sleeping and seating area, heating and lighting, TV and some cooking facilities.
