Just south of the footbridge at Richmond Lock is a footbridge into the Old Deer Park. This is Crown Estate land leased to Richmond upon Thames Borough Council, and is open access all year. It is used mainly for sports and community events, but there's plenty of space to wander among ancient oaks and grassland.
The site was originally connected to Richmond Palace, taking its name from the hunting park created by James I in 1604. The King's Observatory, built by George III in 1769, sits at the centre of the whole park and on the original Meridian Line. Beside the River Thames in the park are a pair of stone obelisks. They were built in 1769 and were originally used by the King's Observatory to observe the transit of Venus across the Sun that year.
