Experience the wildness, freshness, culture and two millennium of history.
Bush Nook Guest House situated within the wonderful Hadrian’s Wall countryside, overlooking Birdoswald Roman Fort and the River Irthing valley at Gilsland, with panoramic views east to Northumberland National Park, Keilder Forest and north over the “debatable land” of Reiver history to the Scottish Lowlands.
The area around Bush Nook has numerous opportunities to be active, with excellent walking and cycling routes to suit all abilities. Likewise the openness of the countryside, peacefulness, and fresh air enable those wishing to have a restful holiday to be equally contented.
The farm stead was originally part of the estate held in trust for the Earl of Carlisle in the Barony of "Guilsland". Built in 1760 with further additions in 1811 and 1849, the house and its outbuildings are stone built in traditional farmhouse style, and like most properties in the area, it was built using stones "borrowed" from the nearby Hadrian's Wall fortifications.
Close to an exceptional section of the best preserved original stone ramparts on Hadrian's Wall, the house is situated right on the Cumbria / Northumberland boundary, halfway between the towns of Haltwhistle and Brampton.
Only 800 meters from the main A69 road we are ideally situated to explore this beautiful scenic part of the North of England, including the North Pennines ANOB, Eden Valley and Alllendale. We are easily accessible to Carlisle and the M6 to the West, Newcastle and the A1 to the East.
We have comfortably furnished Visit England 4 star rated bed and breakfast accommodation available, all en-suite and most with open beamed ceilings.
For those of you wishing to be self-sufficient, we have a sympathetically converted, superbly equipped 4 star self-catering holiday cottage in the Hay Barn, sleeping two people, with exceptional space and atmosphere. There is also the use of a sofa bed for an additional two people; this makes Drumannon Cottage an ideal group or family unit for a cost effective holiday break.
