The Offa's Dyke Path National Trail was the second National Trail l walked, with my son, from 27th June to 12th July 1985. Having caught the bug on the Pembrokeshire Coast Path the year before, the delights of the ODP convinced us that no better way existed than to walk to explore, and to keep fit. And the ODP did not disappoint. A thoroughly enjoyable experience, in spite of the 645 stiles (having counted every one !) over the 15 days and 186 miles walked, described by The Sunday Times at the time as The VC of long-distance walking". But this was all a long time ago, but l now live close enough to take day-walks on the Dyke.Little did l know that l would retire to live nearby, and now read in my journal that l wrote at the time of the constant ups and downs - "very strenuous , but very beautiful" - of the Radnorshire Hills and the Clun forest which had led George Bernard Shaw to write - "No man ought to be in the Government of this land who does not spend three months every year in such country as this".As a 'thank you' both for the help received from the late Glenys Beech at the ODA when planning our walk, and to encourage others, l produced the ODP 'Mileage Chart'. This is still available to buy from the Association and hopefully continues to help others to enjoy this gem.
