We walked the Offa's Dyke trail from south to north over fourteen days in September.  The countryside was stunning and very varied, ranging from the wooded Wye Valley to the bleak terrain of the Black Mountains, to the rolling Shropshire Hills.  The biggest surprise for us was the beautiful Clywdian Hills stretch, which we did in one day from Llandegla to Bodfari; they provided a memorable ending to the walk.  There are many historically important sights en route, which adds to the overall experience. The toughest part of the walk was the section from Knighton northwards.  We had to do approximately six ascents and descents in the day, and some of them were extremely steep.  We would recommending stopping well short of Montgomery, and staying in the vicinity of Cym at the end of that day.Do walk the permissive path that goes over the Pont-y-cysyllte aqueduct; it's quite literally a highpoint of the walk. The trail is very well-marked and easy to follow.  We found the National trail guidebook to be very useful as a back-up on the odd occasion when we weren't completely sure of the path.In summary, a wonderful varied long distance trail that can be accomplished over two weeks, given a reasonable level of fitness and some kind weather!
