Sign 32 – What is Coastal Access?
Prepare for your visit by viewing our digital signage
England Coast Path
What is the England Coast Path?
A new National Trail walking route around England’s Coast.
Opening in stages and governed by the Marine and Coastal Access Act 2009.
What is the Coastal Margin?
The strip of land between the England Coast Path and the sea.
New legal Coastal Access rights (like Open Access rights on the fells) now apply in many places – but not everywhere.
Why don’t Coastal Access rights apply here?
We can’t add these new rights to places where protected wildlife and habitats would be damaged by an increase in public access – like here.
So, Coastal Access rights are excluded from the area beyond this fence. This does not affect existing legal access rights; but SSSI laws still apply.
What is an SSSI?
A Site of Special Scientific Interest is a place whose habitats and species are legallyprotected, for the benefit of conservation and people, especially local communities. These slag banks are in the Duddon Estuary SSSI, and are important for birds like ringed plover and oystercatcher, which nest on gravel and shingle. Harming them is an offence.
More about ringed plovers along the fence to the right.
Visual description: a white A4 sign with the above text, illustrations of a happy dog on a lead, a ringed plover, and an oystercatcher, and a row of logos along the bottom.
