Description
This alternative accessible route avoids a set of metal steps over an existing gas pipeline (pictured) on the standard England Coast Path route. Accessible route path users will need to cross Severn Road / A403 when approaching from the north, or remain on the south-side of Smoke Lane when approaching from the south. The route is approximately 2.3 kilometres / 1.4 miles long.
This route is also suitable for cyclists, as it follows an existing cycleway. Please note this cycleway is not lit at night.
Path Directions
When approaching from the north: after joining the footway on Severn Road / A403 (by the 'Welcome to South Gloucestershire' sign), continue south for approximately 30 metres. Cross the road with caution to the surfaced cycleway of the alternative accessible route. Continue along this cycleway and cross the road, following the waymarked route and passing through areas of woodland and open green spaces. Eventually you will reach the end of the cycleway at the road junction of Chittening Road and Severn Road. Cross the junction using the traffic island, then follow Chittening Road south for approximately 800 metres. Follow the road around the bend to the right, crossing Washingpool Lane. Continue along the road (now Smoke Lane) until you reach the crossing point for the standard England Coast Path route, where you can resume the standard trail.
When approaching from the south: continue on the south-side of Smoke Lane, following the road around to the left and crossing Washingpool Lane. Continue north along the road (now Chittening Road) for approximately 800m. Using the traffic island, cross over Severn Road to join the surfaced cycleway opposite. Continue along this cycleway, passing through green spaces and woodland. Cross the road and follow the waymarked cycleway to its junction with Severn Road. Cross Severn Road / A403 with caution, and follow the footway north for 30 metres, re-joining the standard England Coast Path route by the 'Welcome to South Gloucestershire' sign.
