Big Wild Walk - Kenley Common

Event Location: Starting at the RAF tribute (Hayes Lane) on Kenley Common.

Come join us for a fun-filled day at Kenley Common! The Big Wild Walk is the perfect opportunity to explore nature, get some fresh air, and enjoy the great outdoors.

The walk will have you following a self-guided trail between several stopping points where Rangers and volunteers will be hosting activities where you can:

  • Make your own Hapa Zome leaf prints using hammers, fabric, and leaves.
  • Bug hunt for minibeasts with nets, magnifying pots, trays, and ID sheets.
  • Meet WWII RAF reenactors, explore an air raid shelter, and make your own spitfire.
  • Paint butterfly and moth clay creations.
  • See our charcoal kiln in action billowing out steam and draw a charcoal picture.
  • Meet our sheep and cows grazing the Common.
  • Complete a wildlife quiz along the way.

This event has something for everyone. Bring your friends and family for a day of adventure and nature.

The event will be helping to raise funds to support the work we do on the four Coulsdon Commons and could help us buy items such as equipment for our volunteers, tools to help us manage the nature reserve for wildlife, or material for putting on future educational events.

Event information

You can do the route anytime between 11am and 3pm. Head to the Tribute to get your map and start the walk.

Bring a picnic and make a day of it!

Tickets are £5 per group/booklet. If you would like to make an additional donation, of any amount, this will help to support our goal to improve habitats for wildlife.

Well-behaved dogs welcome. There will be an area where livestock are grazing so you will need to put your dog on a lead at this point.

The route (roughly 4km) is a mixture of flat sections on tarmac and some grassy paths. It would take approximately 1.5-2.5 hours to complete depending on how long you want to spend at each stop.

There is on-street parking around Kenley Common and Coulsdon Common (Hayes Lane and Victor Beamish Avenue) - please be respectful of our neighbours and do not block drives and access. Alternatively, there are bus stops to Caterham and Whyteleafe on the southern side of Kenley Common.

Do come in comfortable shoes, bring plenty of water, and dress for the weather! In the event of bad weather, we cannot offer refunds.

Children under 18 will need to be accompanied by a responsible adult.
