Hay-on-Wye is often described as "the town of books". This pretty market town lies on the east bank of the River Wye just inside the Brecon Beacons National Park. The town is the United Kingdom's mecca for books, boasting thirty major bookshops, mostly selling second hand publications.

It is home to the Hay Literature Festival which brings some 80,000 writers, publishers and literature fans from all across the world at the end of May each year.

The town is also the site of 2 Norman castles.
