Avebury World Heritage Site is full of prehistoric monuments including the largest stone circle in the British Isles, the longest stone avenue (West Kennet), one of the longest Stone Age burial mounds (West Kennet long barrow), one of the largest causewayed enclosures (Windmill Hill), and the largest prehistoric mound in Europe (Silbury Hill).
In the 1930s, the pretty village of Avebury, partially encompassed by the stone circle of this World Heritage Site, was witness to the excavations of archaeologist Alexander Keiller. Keiller opened the museum in Avebury to display his findings.
