The Brunel Museum contains the engine house that pumped out the water when Sir Marc Brunel, assisted by his son Isambard, pioneered the tunnelling technique still used today to create the Rotherhithe Tunnel. In the subterranean Grand Entrance Hall visitors will find the oldest structure in the London Underground. When it opened in 1843 it was the world’s most popular visitor attraction, Brunel organised underground fairs and banquets inside the Thames Tunnel – once described as the Eighth Wonder of the World – in the mid-nineteenth century. It boasted a million visitors in the first three months.
The Brunel Museum is open 10:00 to 17:00 seven days a week.
