Carlisle Cathedral is one of the jewels of North West England and, after standing on the border with Scotland for almost 900 years, it has a lively story to tell. It may not be the best known medieval Cathedral in England, it is certainly not the biggest, but it delights its many visitors with a rich history, a quiet city-centre setting and free entry.
Visit the Treasury Museum to see rare artefacts from the Cathedral's many archaeological digs, alongside treasures from across the Diocese telling the story of Christianity in Cumbria from Roman Britain to the present day; or browse the well-stocked gift shop for a selection of local products alongside beautiful souvenirs, books and greetings cards.
Take your time to stroll the grounds and the cathedral itself, which is a working building where worship is offered every day of the year, and sung Evensong in term time every day except Saturday. You may be lucky to visit during a choir practice or organ recital. The Cathedral is open all year for visitors of all faiths and none. Entry is free. Donations are welcome.
