This flower-rich chalk grassland is located on a hillside with outstanding views over Goring and the River Thames. The reserve is renowned for its thriving populations of orchids, which include bee, pyramidal and common spotted-orchids, common twayblade and whitehelleborine. In May or early June, the famous monkey orchids flower here, too. A hybrid of the monkey and lady orchids was discovered in Hartslock in 2006 and to this day the reserve remains the only place in the UK where such a hybrid has been found. Aside from flowers, the reserve is also excellent for spotting bees, uncommon grasshoppers, day-flying moths, butterflies and red kites.
Parking areas can be found in Goring village or at Goring & Streatley railway station. Alternatively, the reserve can be accessed via the Thames Path or as part of the Goring Wild Walk (see website). The reserve is a 1.5 mile walk from the Ridgeway National Trail, starting from Goring village.
