The Iron Giant Sculpture was created to mark the start of the South West Coast Path. The Trail begins here and follows the coast for 630 miles through Devon and north Cornwall to Land's End where it doubles back and heads east along the south coast to end at Poole Harbour in Dorset.
To the east it marks the start of the West Somerset Coast Path, which follows the coast to Steart Marshes where it joins the River Parrett Trail.
The sculpture was created in 2001 after a competition by the South West Coast Path Association. It was sculpted by Owen Cunningham from designs by Sarah Ward, a pupil at West Somerset Community College at the time.
