When you walk down the Thames Path from Godstow lock towards Oxford, you will see Port Meadow on the far side of the river. In mid-summer, it is a sea of buttercups, but it winter, there is a large lake with lots of widgeon and teal. When you reach Fiddlers Island, you can make a short diversion onto the meadow, and have a picnic or perhaps find the cafes and pubs in Jericho (a part of Oxford that has lots of history).
