The first Putney Bridge, built in 1729, was a wooden bridge with 26 arches. It was the first bridge to be built over the River Thames in central London after London Bridge. People using the bridge paid tolls each way until 1877. Before this bridge the only way to cross the river was by ferry, or walking across the river when it froze over in 1739, 1788-89 and 1813-14. Putney Bridge is the only bridge in Britain to have churches at both ends: All Saints on the north bank and St Mary the Virgin on the south bank.
