The Saxon Church of St Pancras was built on the site of ancient earthworks, which possibly date back to Roman times. It is one of only six churches in the UK dedicated to St Pancras. The village name reflects the occupation of charcoal burners who lived here before the Normans. Part of the churchyard is maintained as a wild life area.
