St Peter and St Paul’s Church, Chaldon is internationally renowned for the twelfth-century doom mural on the west wall of the church and the church is mentioned in the Doomsday book. The west wall is almost covered by this superb example of medieval art. The Chaldon paintings are thought to be the work of a travelling monk well-versed in Greek art. The vividly coloured painting shows the Biblical Day of Judgement, the painting is made of yellow ochre and red ochre, and spans just over 17 feet across and is over 11 feet high. It was whitewashed during the Commonwealth period and only discovered in 1869 during restoration work.
Visitors are very welcome and the church is open daily from 10am to 3pm during the winter and 10am to 4pm during the summer.
During British Summer Time the Hazell Rooms host very popular teas on Sunday afternoons, providing a welcome place to rest for ramblers and visitors alike. Teas are served between 3 p.m. and 4.30 p.m.
