The Great Bird Screen at Brean has been built to prevent disturbance to an important high tide roost site on the Severn Estuary Site of Special Scientific Interest, which is just beyond the screen.

For two hours either side of high tide, this site is used by roosting water birds, which congregate to rest or sleep where they feel safe.

Birds at the site include Redshank, Dunlin, and Shelduck.
