Trains to Stroud bring visitors right to the heart of this Gloucestershire market town. Within about five minutes' walk of the station you can be browsing the wealth of independent shops, galleries and markets and enjoying the town's renowned foodie culture. The Cotswolds Way footpath runs through Stroud, and an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty surrounds the town, offering in a range of outdoor activities from pinicking to paragliding. In the 19th century Stroud was an important centre for the woollen cloth industry - the wider district contained over 150 mills, powered by rivers and streams flowing through the nearby Five Valleys. The station itself dates back to 1845, and was designed by the great railway engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel. As you travel along the Golden Valley Line, as the line between Swindon and Cheltenham is now known, look out for a series of striking viaducts, also designed by Brunel.
There are entrances, car parks and cycle storage on both sides of Stroud station. The ticket office, main entrance and taxi rank are on the town side, off Russell Street, with direct access onto platform 1 for trains towards Swindon and London. Trains towards Gloucester and Cheltenham depart from platform 2. Access between the platforms is via stairs and a footbridge - there is currently no step-free access. Toilets, a cafe and a ticket machine can be found on platform 1.
