A section of the King Charles III England Coast Path between is closed from 1st August – 31st May annually to protect sensitive wildlife.

An alternative route, in dark blue on the website interactive map, is open all year round and is fully signposted on the ground. Please ensure you follow the signs and keep to the directed route.

A PDF map is available to download below.

Why is the route closed?

During winter the Northumberland coast supports a wide range of foraging and resting water and seabirds, which are present in internationally important numbers including light-bellied brent and greylag geese.

Chesterhill Slakes, Budle Bay, Fenham Flats and the surrounding areas form a part of Lindisfarne National Nature Reserve and the majority of waterbirds feed on the extensive areas of mud, sand, and saltmarsh within the NNR. During the spring the area is also home to little tern nesting sites which are being actively managed to encourage further nesting.

Public access between 1st August – 31st May when most birds are present would cause significant disturbance, especially if walkers are accompanied by dogs.
