Sign 7 - Burton Marsh

King Charles the Third England Coast Path.

Welcome to Burton Marsh.

You are on the King Charles III England Coast Path – a 2,700 mile National Trail walking route around the whole country.

Where can I walk?

Please keep to the waymarked England Coast Path. To keep you safe from hidden hazards and MOD ranges, and to protect nature, no new Coastal Access rights exist seaward of the tarmac path.

Can I get to the Wales Coast Path from here?

Yes. A new waymarked link route takes you from the border on Burton Marsh to the Wales Coast Path at Hawarden Bridge, and public transport at Shotton.

Is the path ever closed?

Yes. Once or twice a year, storm surges can flood the path and leave lots of debris near the England-Wales border. The path may be legally closed during that time. Check nearby signs for information. You may also need to wait if farm animals are being moved.

Alongside an illustration of a happy golden retriever dog: Dogs are welcome here but must be on a lead around farm animals. Always bag, take and bin their poo.

What can I do here?

Walk,

Use a mobility scooter or wheelchair.

Cycle on existing cycle paths.

Walk your dog, under close control and on a lead around livestock.

Follow instructions on signage.

Watch birds and wildlife – but keep your distance.

Birds of the Dee.

Burton Marsh is part of the RSPB’s Dee Estuary reserve and is conserved for the special saltmarsh habitat and the wildlife that uses it. Wading birds like godwit and curlew, and the heron-like little egret feed from the muds and shallow waters. Reed buntings nest in the reeds, while skylarks sing away overhead. Illustrations are shown of reed bunting, skylark, black-tailed godwit, little egret and curlew.

What is Coastal Access?

A new legal access right to walk on the England Coast Path, and sometimes the Coastal Margin between the trail and the sea. Signs like this one will tell you where Coastal Access rights don’t apply.

Emergency? Call 999. Ask for the Coastguard. You are at grid reference SJ301745. What 3 Words mountain.tender.dumplings.
